Over 100 local residents gathered inside Pilgrim Baptist Church Saturday, March 22 to participate in the Eighth Annual South Chicago Ecumenical Easter Service and Resource Fair. The event was organized and facilitated by an interfaith council of area faith leaders from over a dozen denominations including Baptist, Methodist, and Catholic.
Entertainment showcased the talent of youth from Bowen High School and Our Lady Guadalupe Schools as well as the musicians from New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Among the many area leaders present, 10th Ward Alderman John Pope delivered a word of welcome to guests and State representative Marlow Colvin, 33rd District, was also in attendance.
Marking the event’s eighth anniversary, the title of this year’s service is “Renewing Hope in South Chicago.”
“This is South Chicago’s year to start again fresh,” says Pastor Hillard Hudson, co-founder of the South Chicago Ecumenical Pastors and Peoples Association who sponsors the event. “We want to renew people’s hope in where they live. We, as a community, need to reach into our souls to find the inertia for a new era and direction.”
We wish to extend a special thanks to all participating organizations that made this year’s event a great success:
To celebrate the Federal Reserve Bank’s MoneySmart Week, Claretian Associates hosted two workshops in partnership with our “Dollars with Sense” committee the week of April 20th at Ada S. McKinley's Neighborhood House.
Since 2004, Claretian Associates has convened the committee comprised of 15 representatives of the community, local lenders and non-profit organizations to create the financial literacy program throughout South Chicago.
On April 21 Ed Grossman from the Chicago Legal Clinic l presented “Let’s Talk about Estate Planning! What Are You Waiting for?” Seniors received pertinent information on wills, trusts, beneficiaries, and powers of attorney. Also, on April 25, visitors dropped in for the South Chicago Dollars with Sense Financial Literacy Fair, which provided an opportunity to learn about a broad range of financial services including managing, planning, banking, housing, and refinancing your money.
