South
Works
After
standing vacant for seven years, South Works, the former USX Corp.
steel mill site, located adjacent to Claretian Associates' target
area, was recently declared environmentally safe by the Environmental
Protection Agency and is now ready for redevelopment. With 576
acres and two miles of shoreline, South Works is the city's largest
remaining lakefront parcel of land. Solo Cup has purchased 107
of the 576 acres to construct a one million square foot manufacturing
and distribution facility. The impact of the redevelopment of
the South Works site will be tremendous, encompassing traffic
patterns and traffic density; short- and long-term employment
opportunities; the construction of a new elementary school; the
supply, quality, and cost of housing; and the redevelopment of
the South Chicago neighborhood.
In
conjunction with the redevelopment of the South Works site, the
City of Chicago is planning to invest heavily in the housing and
infrastructure of South Chicago and has asked Claretian Associates
to lead the ambitious housing effort known as the "South
Chicago Housing Initiative." The State of Illinois and the
City of Chicago are planning to invest $84 million in South Chicago's
infrastructure and housing. Claretian Associates is excited about
this opportunity and believes if managed properly it can benefit
the long-term South Chicago residents who weathered the closing
of the steel mills and the decline of their community.

Homes for South Chicago III and Casa
Kirk on our web site for more information on the South
Chicago Housing Initiative.
