Affordable Housing
Since 1991, Claretian Associates has built a web of relationships and activities that have affirmed our faith in the future of South Chicago. Continuing our housing development activities in a targeted 12-block area where we have created over 240 affordable homes and apartments, Claretian Associates has simultaneously worked with other community partners to undertake housing development projects and services that have enriched the lives of the entire Southeast Chicago area. In the process, we have transformed a geographic area into a community. We have developed and sold over 40 single-family homes through the city’s New Homes for Chicago program. Our New Homes for South Chicago program has received national and city-wide recognition including the 2005 national runner-up of The Home Depot Foundation’s Award of Excellence for Affordable Housing Built Responsibly in the award’s inaugural year and the 2005 Richard H. Driehaus Award for Outstanding Not-Profit Neighborhood Real Estate Project at the Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards sponsored by LISC/Chicago. An additional 89 units are slated for the development in the coming years.
Claretian Associates does more than develop homes for South Chicago’s seniors and families. We connect the community and coordinate the work of our diverse leaders and residents to build a better neighborhood. In 2007, we received the Chicago Community Trust’s Outstanding Community Initiative of the Year award, given to us at the annual Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards sponsored by LISC/Chicago. We are also the lead agency for South Chicago’s New Communities Program, a community-wide effort to improve residents’ quality of life. It is part of their initiative to support comprehensive community development in 16 Chicago neighborhoods.
In addition, Claretian Associates serves as the lead agency for United Way of Metropolitan Chicago’s LIVE UNITED Neighborhood Network Initiative for South Chicago. Through the initiative, United Way is targeting eight city and suburban communities to receive assistance in planning to organize community partners, further engaging the local
community, identifying specific goals, and evaluating resources and strategies to reach goals of the community.
Claretian Associates provides affordable homes and apartments to roughly 240 families and seniors. Claretian Associates owns/manages Villa Guadalupe senior housing (53 units), Casa Kirk (29 units), Rehab South Chicago (8 units), 9100 S. Burley Apartments (7 units), South Chicago Senior Housing (101 units) serving very low to moderate income families. Most families struggle with unemployment, life skills issues, domestic violence and mental health issues.
Claretian Associates also connects residents with financial tools and resources implements a financial literacy program with a money-saving, “green” focus. We work closely with the residents who rent our affordable apartments as well as other community members. We provide outreach to connect local residents in need of foreclosure services through links to small church groups, local schools and day care centers that connect working poor families to available help, even before they face foreclosure.
In planning for the next developments, Claretian Associates is moving forward with efforts to redevelop problem properties that already are or are in danger of being foreclosed. We are also in the predevelopment stages for several affordable rental units from a local agency as well as the development of a new affordable rental building for single individuals and non-traditional families such as grandparents raising grandkids.
