Villa Guadalupe
In 1985, a South Chicago neighborhood assessment determined that approximately one in five older adults in the area lived at or near the poverty level. In response to this assessment, the Claretian Missionaries decided to build Villa Guadalupe, a 53-unit apartment building for those over age fifty-five. Villa Guadalupe opened in the summer of 1991 and earned The Retirement Research Foundation’s Encore Award in 1992. Villa Guadalupe was the first new residential construction in South Chicago in over 10 years and continues to be the catalyst for the development of single-family homes, rehabbed apartments and neighborhood improvement projects.
