Safe passage
Claretian Associates operates the Safe Passage Program in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools at Bowen High School, Corliss High School and Burham Elementary, Douglas Taylor Elementary School, Arnold Mireles Academy, and Myra Bradwell School of Excellence. Safe Passage is offered to select schools to provide a positive, trusted adult presence for students as they travel to and from school and in response to the need for safety in high crime areas. Workers are posted on Safe Passage routes to support children traveling to and from school during arrival and dismissal bell times. Workers are employed by community-based organizations in the school communities served and can be identified by neon-colored Safe Passage vests. Safe Passage is about presence, community, and sensibility.
Claretian Associates employs part-time, seasonal workers to be the eyes and ears of the community. Workers report to daily assigned students as they travel to and from bus stops and board necessary buses and report all conflicts, area barriers and suspicious activity to the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Public Schools. Workers follow a code of conduct that includes appearance, uniform (vests), attendance, professionalism, and manners. In addition, the program often serves as catalyst for workers to build professional skills as a springboard to further career goals.
