Sims was awarded because not only was he a Metropolitan Peace Academy student but also a college student, and Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) Case Manager. “I feel great because I was able to achieve something,” said Sims. Metropolitan Peace Academy is an 18-week training program for professionals already in the field of outreach work. The program teaches multiple disciplines and best practices to outreach workers, so they can better implement violence prevention/intervention to Chicago neighborhoods. Sims along with Marlon Buggs, Supervisor of CP4P, graduated from the academy. Former cohorts from the academy were also present for the graduation. “It caught me off guard. I didn't know I was getting an award. Since it was a surprise it felt good,” said Sims. His family was also there for his achievement and Sims was proud he could share this experience with them. “They were proud to see this because they are there with me every day and got to see me accomplish one of my goals,” said Sims.
